The visit to the Palmer Museum was very helpful. I am not someone who visits museums in my spare time and there were a few things I did not think of. During the visit our guide warned us, even as college students, of the naked paintings that are around the museum. Even though we are all in our 20's she felt it necessary to warn us of this aspect of the museum. This would be something very important to discuss with the children in advance and explain reasons for such pictures. Our guide gave us two things that are great to talk about with younger (k-4) kids about the paintings. Lines and color. Both of these can easily start the discussion about the painting because of their more obvious answers. When you ask what lines the children see, their answer wont be wrong, find a way to work with it. This is ok because there will be different directions of lines in every painting. The 3rd useful tip our guide gave us was about knowing the painting and its meaning. No child is going to want to sit and look at a picture if they don't know why or what they are looking at. If you know the back ground of a painting it is easier to make connections with it. We were shown a painting done by a painter from Williamsport. If you are teaching near that area you can talk about where the painter is from and that anyone from anywhere, even just down the road, can become an artist. This tour was very fun and helpful. I am going to have to make a few more visits myself before taking my future students there.
